More than twenty five years of experience in branding consultancy business, and teaching design and branding at Vilnius Academy of Arts Graphic Design Department for the past 15 years – is it a lot or not? There's only six graphic design professors in Lithuania and I'm only one who possesses the degree of Licentiate of Arts; 15 years of written comments and insights for Designology – by the way, have you ever had a look in there? I hope these posts will help you to better understand and get a good handle on the labyrinths of social communication.
It all started in 1990 when, after graduating from Vilnius ? Lithuanian Art Institute (now Vilnius Academy of Arts), with the mediation of the unequalled Philippe Starck, I went to Paris (L'ENSCI – L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle) to continue studying design, and became the first design student from Lithuania after the fall of the Soviet regime. You can get an idea what Paris looked like at that time; watching André Téchiné’s 1991 movie J'embrasse pas. In the 21st century studying abroad does not surprise anyone, but then, in 1990…
However, my creative hunger brought me back to Lithuania, to the advertising agency Lowe Age (now Fabula), and later to TBWA \ Vilnius, where I helped finding customers for the brands such as BMW, Rover, Land Rover, Mini, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, 3M, IBM, Novartis, Mobil, McDonald's, Knorr, Lilly, Roche, DHL, Electrolux, Bic, Bahlsen, Henkel, Nivea, GlaxoSmithKline, Nordea (now Luminor), as well as Lithuanian companies, such as Kaišiadorių agrofirma, Klaipėdos maistas, Baltic Amadeus, Sisneta, Bitė, Comliet, Baldų rojus, Narbutas, Lithuanian Savings Bank (now Swedbank), Lithuanian Agricultural Bank (now Luminor), SBA baldai, Drauda, Vilniaus bankas (now SEB), Baltman, Monton, Utenos trikotažas, Anykščių vynas, Ingman Vega, Naujoji rūta, Lithuanian Yellow Pages, Finasta, Armitana, Alita, Utenos alus, Rimi, TV3, Power Hit Radio and many others.
In 2004 there was a turning point: Lithuania became a part of the European Union, I founded my own design studio "Mata Hari", dedicated to visual branding and I was invited to teach at Vilnius Academy of Arts, The Faculty of Design. Over the years "Mata Hari" has helped and is still helping to shape and strengthen a proper “self” for many public institutions and private companies through graphic design. At the same time I share my experience with the younger generation of designers seeking to find their place in the world of communication. What about the future? The future depends on us, designers.
